Gossip Girl gets Yale all wrong

It doesn’t look like the real Yalies are pleased with Gossip Girl’s recent portrayal of their school.

According to this article from the Yale Daily News, the CW show relied heavily on Yale stereotypes. The article explains that many students were buzzing with excitement before Monday night’s episode, but ended up being let down. Although there were some realistic references to the school such as the Skull and Bones and the Harvard-Yale football game, students said they were dissapointed with the overall episode.

Yale students said that the show’s portrayal of the admissions process was completely false and inaccurate. Serena, Blair and Dan would never have been granted private interviews with the dean of admissions and the two back-stabbing friend would never have scored an invite to his house for a party. In fact, Jeff Brenzel, the real dean of admissions, said: “I don’t do any interviews of applicants or potential applicants, so I’m not in the position of advising anyone.” He also added: “I certainly do not hold or attend private dinners for candidates.”

One freshman counselor, Katie Zimmerman, even organized a Gossip Girl party for freshmen because she is such a fan of the show. However, she ended up being disappointed with the result of the episode: “It didn’t bring out the Yale that we all know and love, but instead just used stereotypes about Yale. It was kind of a failure.”

Many fans are speculating about whether or not this episode was potentially setting up the show’s future at the New Haven school. If the producers do decide to take Gossip Girl to the ivy leagues, it looks like they may have their work cut out for them.

Gossip Girl - Death Coming

A death to come on Gossip Girl? OMG — say it ain’t so!

While attending Mohegan Sun’s Wind Casino celeb-filled grand opening this past weekend, we bumped into Jessica Szohr on the red carpet, and got some shocking scoopage on what’s to come for Vanessa and the Gossip gang.

“There’s a lot going on,” said Szohr. “There’s a love triangle between Vanessa, Nate and Jenny, there’s a funeral….” Catching herself before she said too much, she then added, “That’s all I can say. We can’t talk about it!”

Though Szohr was mum on who kicks the bucket, she did hint that as far as Vanessa’s love life goes, “There’s some flirtation with Chuck Bass coming up — but I think she still misses someone else.”

Who do you think will be the one to die this season? We can’t imagine any of the main kids getting offed so soon in the series, but then again, anything can happen on television.

Spinoff could spread “Gossip”

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The makers of “Gossip Girl” are planning a spinoff series set at a girls’ boarding school.

Producers are hoping to expand the popular CW show either by giving co-star Taylor Momsen her own series or by introducing a new character in the fall who is later spun off.

Regardless of which actor is used as the center of the new show, the story would likely draw on the arc of Momsen’s character, Jenny Humphrey, in the “Gossip Girl” book series for inspiration.

Jenny is a self-esteem-challenged outsider who struggles to fit in. In the books, as the result of a series of public embarrassments (such as appearing in a teen magazine wearing next to nothing), Jenny must repeat ninth grade or find a new school. She elects to enter a boarding school and reinvents herself as a popular girl. Her story is told in a series of six “Gossip” spinoff novels called “The It Girl.”

The big question is whether such a project would be picked up by the CW. The network already has two teen dramas set in high school this fall — “Gossip” and “90210,” a contemporary spinoff of the 1980s Fox series — as well as “One Tree Hill,” in which the characters recently graduated from high school. Beyond that, despite the devoted following and significant pop-culture buzz that “Gossip” has drawn, its ratings are modest. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Gossip Girl’: Sneak peek at at the wedding finale

What could make Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), our favorite bad-girl-gone-good, look so blue? Apparently, her life and reputation are on the line!

Yes, you’re looking at brand new “Gossip Girl” wedding scene stills, shot on location today in New York (where, apparently, some other “Gossip Girl” bloggers reside).

Our Serena (the lovely Lively, a longtime resident of Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world) is rocking her multi-tiered pale yellow floral chiffon halter gown designed by Ralph Lauren. (A perfect dress for a picnic in the California poppy fields. Hmmm?)

But why so East Coast glum, Serena? What is G up to now? Of course, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) is there, preparing to do battle with G (Michelle Trachtenberg) while wearing a pink Collette Dinnigan frock.

Bad boy Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) and Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) turn up in their formal wear. And you just know that the society wedding of the year will provide Serena the chance to finally pour out her heart and the truth about her past to Dan.

As previously reported, Lydia Hearst guest stars in the episode as Amelia, a stylin’ interior decorator in a pair of amaaaaazing gladiator heels by Siegerson Morrison.

We do wonder if the gossip girls at New York mag have any more daily intel into this wedding scene. After all, it is conveniently located right in their backyard.

Gossip Girl Spoiler: An Overdose

While we’ve been fixated on the two biggest Gossip Girl spoilers - who comes out of the closet, and Serena’s secret - here’s another we came across this morning.

An insider on the set of Gossip Girl reports that someone on the show overdoses in the second-to-the-last episode this season.

That would be the week after next. “All About My Brother” is the next Gossip Girl episode, set for May 5. “Woman On The Verge,” scheduled for May 12, is the episode in question.

“Things go down, there’s a lot of OMG moments,” star Chace Crawford recently revealed on E!’s Daily 10. “It’s good.”

Six Gossip Girl Hotties

Which of these characters will suffer an overdose on Gossip Girl? Or will it be someone new? Got any ideas? Share them with the Insider!

Gossip Girl: The Bad Girl is Back

Blake Lively and Michelle TrachtenbergEver since Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) got off the train at Grand Central in the pilot episode of Gossip Girl, she’s been desperately trying to trade in her former party-girl ways to become the goody-goody type of girl that middle class folk like Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) can stand to be around. And guess what? It’s gotten a little bit boring.

To be perfectly honest, I never really believed Serena’s claims that she used to be a bad girl. Sure, she was responsible for stealing the keys to the school pool, resulting in a raucous, drug-filled pool party that nearly got a student killed. Sure, she slept with her best friend’s boyfriend before running away to boarding school. And yes, she does enjoy a cocktail or five on a schoolnight. But Serena’s earnest attempts at being good always strike me as wishy-washy. I don’t know, maybe it’s the simpering way Blake Lively delivers her lines. Read the rest of this entry »

Watch With Kristin Spoilers

Marcos in Chino, Calif.:  I’m ashamed to admit I can’t stop watching Gossip Girl. Any scoop on Blair and Chuck?
Do not despair! The show’s charms are bigger than all of us. Blair and Chuck continue to dance around each other, and things get complicated in the season finale…But not as complicated as things get for Lily! Let’s just say she isn’t done with Rufus, but she will also be walking down the aisle to Bart.

Fabrizio in New Orleans:  More Gossip Girl! I love that show.

Serena goes on a downward spiral and Nate, Chuck and Blair team up to help her.

Nancy Jo in Owatonna, Minn.:  Oooh! Juicy scoop about Eric van der Woodsen hooking up with Jenny’s new boyfriend. Thanks for that, Kristin! How will Jenny take it?
Not well. And it will knock her out of the Queen B circle for the time being.

Gossip Girl Takes over the Palace Hotel

The cast of Gossip Girl films at the Palace Hotel in New York City on Wednesday.

Cast members Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley and Kelly Rutherford (in Vera Wang) shot a wedding scene inside the Palace. (Obviously, the wedding scene they were filming was for Lily van der Woodsen–Serena’s mom.)

Blake can be seen with the latest environmentally-friendly handbag as she leaves Silvercup Studios. The “Kooba for Barneys Green Eco Bag” is a limited-edition canvas tote.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Kelly Rutherford, aka Lily, recently revealed that Serena’s younger brother Eric van der Woodsen (Connor Paolo) will be playing the gay character that everyone has been spectulating about. The episode airs May 3. Another rumor is that Eric will be caught making out with Jenny Humphrey’s new boyfriend, played by Jesse Swenson.

Gossip Girl Realism Scale Returns!

It’s our favorite show no matter what, but just how realistic is Gossip Girl? The fun New York Magazine rating system attempts to answer this, taking into account the real and surreal moments from each episode.

According to the show’s unofficial publication, this week’s new episode, “The Blair Bitch Project,” rated about even on the realism scale. Below are some excerpts from this New York Magazine feature …

  • It may seem ridiculous that Rufus lets Jenny go to Aspen with her friends (that she seemingly just made), but it’s so real. Remember, he and Jenny’s mom just got a divorce. He’s overcompensating! Plus 3.
  • The Waldorf maid, Dorota, plays the Will & Grace card. “Club Bed is over,” she says, yanking Blair out of bed. Sorry, =cartoonishly sassy maids only exist in the fantasy minds of gay men. Minus 1.
  • Eric van der Woodsen’s hair has really improved, probably per the influence of Chuck. Plus 1.
  • Jenny puts a large stuffed animal in her bed to fool her brother and father into thinking it’s her. Plus 2 for introducing this trick to a generation of kids too young to have seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Homeless Dan

  • Serena and Dan, adorably and annoyingly, sit outside the Palace with a blanket and hot chocolate. Like homeless people. Not in that courtyard, kids. Minus 1.
  • A deliveryman pulls up to Constance Billiard. “Serena van der Woodsen?” he asks, casually. Just dumping three cases of Champagne in the entrance to a school? Not even on the Upper East Side, friends. Minus 5.
  • Isabel observes that Jenny’s dad is a hottie. She’s right. Plus 2.
  • Blair Waldorf is walking to school wearing sunglasses and head scarf … and what is that billowing, royal blue robe? Is she one of the FLDS wives? If so, then where’s her Gibson girl cut? Minus 1.
  • As nausea-inducing as it is, this Gossip Girl quote has a gross ring of truth to it — Serena: “I don’t want to share your DNA.” Chuck: “Then you should get new hand towels.” Plus 2, for going there.
