| October 5, 2008 | More Details on “Inconceivable” Casting Scoop |
Early last month, Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly broke the news that Wallace Shawn would be guest starring on the CW’s Gossip Girl. And this week, TV Guide reported that Shawn will be playing a love interest for Blair’s mother Eleanor Waldorf. Shawn will appear on Gossip Girl for a multiple-episode arc beginning on November 11, to kick off November sweeps. You may remember Wallace Shawn as the Sicilian criminal mastermind who was outwitted by Westley in The Princess Bride. He is memorable for his catchword: “Inconceivable!†Now, he’ll be joining the ranks of the Upper East Side as the father of Serena’s new beau, Aaron (guest star John Patrick Amedori). There aren’t a whole lot of details about how Wallace Shawn’s arc will play out yet, but I have read the entire Gossip Girl book series so I do know that he’ll be playing a man named Cyrus Rose, a wealthy Jewish real estate tycoon. Approximately six months after he and Eleanor get married, Eleanor gives birth to a baby girl, whom Blair names Yale in honor of the college she most desires to attend. Blair is no fan of Cyrus because he is old and fat and has a taste for wearing the tackiest outfits. He has a son named Aaron, a hippie dippie vegan who smokes only herbal cigarettes, who does indeed have a relationship with book-verse Serena. I hope that Gossip Girl the show will stick to its literary roots a bit with Shawn’s character. I would love to see him decked out in puce-colored suits and garish gold watches. I’m not sure whether the powers that be behind Gossip Girl will have him getting married to Eleanor, but that might be an interesting turn of events as well. That way, Eleanor and Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) can become the desperate housewives of the Upper East Side. The next new episode of Gossip Girl, entitled “New Haven Can Wait,†will air on Monday, October 6, at 8pm on the CW. |

Dan who? There’s a new guy in town and Serena kissing him! The latest development on Gossip Girl is sure to have the entire Upper East Side buzzing. After all, Serena’s liplock with the mystery man was caught on a JumboTron in Times Square. Here’s the scoop: John Patrick Amedori is set to appear in four episodes of the scandalous CW show (the first airs Oct. 27) as Aaron Rose, a new beau for Blake Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen. The Maryland native, 21, talked to PEOPLE about his new role, kissing Blake (he’s friends with her real-life boyfriend Penn Badgley!) and being in the middle of the the paparazzi-fan swirl called Gossip Girl. Tell us about your character, Aaron Rose. How does he get involved with Serena? There are pictures of you kissing Blake Lively in Times Square with everyone watching. What was that like? |

| September 8, 2008 | Shouldn’t Gossip Girl (and the CW’s Other Shows) Be Online by Now? |
For the last five weeks of its freshman season, the CW discontinued posting its buzzy but largely unwatched series Gossip Girl online, as part of an effort to drum up its oldteevee viewer numbers. We newteevee watchers booed and hissed, hoping the ploy wouldn’t work and set an example for other networks. Ratings stayed low, but the series got renewed, and then over the summer, the CW said it would reverse its policy and post Gossip Girl online when it returned to the air in September. But…It’s been nearly a week since the series’ sophomore debut, and episode 1 still isn’t online. Standard practice among the TV networks is to post shows online after they air in Hawaii; if not then, sometime soon the next day. A week is pushing it. We have to wonder if the CW is reneging on its reversal. Furthermore, as far as I can tell, the CW hasn’t posted any episodes from its new season; what seems to be the most recent video in its full episode queue is an episode of Everybody Hates Chris that originally aired in May. Either the guy who loads new videos into the system quit last week, or there’s been an unacknowledged policy reversal. And this at a time when networks across the board are posting more and more of their shows for free, ad-supported streaming online, in some cases before they air on TV. As for actual broadcast television, interpretations of Gossip Girl’s season premiere’s ratings were mixed; on the one hand, the episode failed to top last season’s premiere, and it got beat by the CW’s 90210 revival the next night; on the other hand, it apparently did amazingly great with women aged 18 to 34. Meanwhile, Gossip Girl was promptly posted on iTunes after it aired. And nearly a week later, it still occupies the No. 1 slot. (The show has done well all along on iTunes, and probably since people actually pay $1.99 for it there the CW hasn’t messed with that success.) One Tree Hill is at No. 2, while 90210 doesn’t seem to have been posted at all.
We’ve tried to contact the CW’s press department through official means, but that hasn’t worked so far, so maybe blogging will do the trick. Hey CW, whatever happened to posting your shows online? |

Real life designers have taken note. Fashion lines are scrambling to get their clothes onto the lovely loose-lipped ladies, as big labels on these soon-to-be big stars have started to earn clothing companies big bucks. According to a recent feature in the New York Times, merchants, designers and trend consultants say that Gossip Girl is a heavy influence on how teen girls with excess money choose what to wear. “It represents a stylistic departure,†Sari Sloane, the vice president for fashion merchandising for Intermix, told the New York Times. “A move away from a Hollywood look that was very casual and improvised, to something more polished, more big-city chic.†Read the rest of this entry » |

The girls of Gossip Girl know where it’s at when it comes to fashion. You wouldn’t expect any less from the top of the rich social elite, especially from Blair Waldorf, daughter of the fictional fashion designer Eleanor Waldorf. Sporting preppy, sleek clothing, the girls of the Upper Eastside know how to make a style statement.
